Mycoremediation of Relational Ecosystems

Organising in volunteer communities is challenging when people experience tech fatigue and live in different locations. We took inspiration from how fungi are used to restore ecosystems and designed a partly technical, partly artistic species to connect the organisation.

Snapshot of Myko species art work with cats, teapots and things representing realtime actions in the org.

The species consists of a web platform where many of the actions within the organisation make up a realtime changing art piece. When someone renews their membership, a paper airplane is added. When someone takes part in a tea ritual, teapots and mugs appear. When someone does admin, bureacracy items appear, and so on. Try below to see the platform in action.

We set out to create a moving art piece that everyone could contribute to while still keeping it cohesive. To solve this, we locked certain areas of the canvas to specific graphic types. For when the canvas was empty, we introduced weather states that can be lightly interacted with, so it always feels alive. To make it playful and engaging for all members, we created graphics for everything from admin work to book club. We also wanted to make sure non-members could join in easily, so we kept login requirements to a minimum.

Due to shifting priorities within the organisation, the project has not been fully implemented.
